Leonard’s journey in life began when he enlisted in the Navy, which brought him to Hampton Roads. It was there that he found love and happiness. On a cold January day in 1959, he hitchhiked from Norfolk, Virginia, to Washington, North Carolina, to meet a girl who had become his pen pal while stationed in Norfolk. Despite the trials of his health, Shianne remained a steadfast source of love, compassion, and unwavering support in his life, showing selfless acts of love, and embodying the true essence of family devotion for her GaGa and Papa. Leonard’s love for his family was evident in his daily actions.

A true man of God, Leonard found solace in reading the Bible and praying with his bride every night. He also had a passion for writing poetry; whistling, singing hymns, and making his family’s favorite coleslaw. His love for the simple things in life was a testament to his humble and kind nature.
