Mildred V. Morris, 88, of Barhamsville

Mildred V. Morris (Whiting’s Funeral Home)

Ms. Mildred V. Morris was born on April 15, 1935, in New Kent County, Virginia. Early in the morning on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, “while the dew was still on the roses” she peacefully entered into eternal rest, peacefully in her sleep with her children surrounding her in loving care.

At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Barhamsville, VA, where she served God wholeheartedly. She was a member of the Senior choir, the usher board, an avid Sunday school member, and filled in anywhere there was a need. She was a Mistress of Ceremony for several occasions throughout the surrounding area churches and was always dressed to the “T” with a hat and gloves to match. Mildred loved to sing and was a member of the New Kent Combined Choir, where she sang in various churches across the area.

She was educated in the New Kent County School System and was in the 1952 graduating class of George W. Watkins High School in Quinton, VA. After graduation, she attended Hair Academy and received a Beautician’s License. She worked in beauty salons in Lightfoot and Williamsburg, where she was known as a hot comb, finger wave, and Marcel curl master. She gave of herself unselfishly to her neighbors and community. She always said, “I appreciate your time because your time is valuable,” and then she’d slip you some gas money. Mildred volunteered her time and love with the Child Development Resources Center of James City County. She was a childcare provider throughout James City and York Counties for several years. Mildred loved to share wisdom and often told others, ”God gave everyone five talents; do you know what yours are?” After which, she would also share, “God gave everyone a purpose; what’s yours?” Mildred always gave hugs, a hearty hello, and that beautiful smile to brighten someone’s day.

She is preceded in transition by the love of her life, Mr. Clarence R. Morris, whom she married on February 28, 1953; mother, Pearl L. Wallace, who lived to be 108 years of age; and one brother, James Armstead.

Mildred leaves to cherish five children, Clarissa Taswell (Mike), Cassandra Clayton, Kevin Morris, Joyce Wright (Marvin), and Lisa Lane (Gary); nine grandchildren, Earl and Jamon Taswell, Brandon Mayes, Takeya, Taneka, Damien, and Ebony Jones, and Marvin and Derrick Wright; eleven great-grandchildren (and one on the way); sister-in-law, Queen Sutherlin (Warren); brothers-in-law, Robert Morris (Jessie) and Alvester Morris (Delois); two close cousins, Roderick and Kenneth Piggott; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Mildred’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Barhamsville, VA. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Morris may be viewed on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the church. Facial covering is recommended for all services.
