Matthew “Matt” J. Schorr, Sr., 84, of Virginia Beach

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, “Wow! What a Ride!” (Hunter S. Thompson)

Matthew “Matt” J. Schorr, Sr., our husband, dad, and Pap died on Friday, April 7, 2023. Matt was born in West Mifflin, PA on December 21, 1938, to the late Albert J. Schorr and Eleanor Schorr.

Matt was a loving husband and father. He was an avid outdoorsman, with a great love of fishing, turkey and duck seasons, and ginger brandy. From a young age he enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with anything that needed fixing. After retiring from Xerox, Matt spent time in Mississippi building homes with Habitat for Humanity following Hurricane Katrina. That experience made him think of the needs in the Virginia Beach community, and with others he was a founding member of Faith Works Coalition whose mission is to eliminate poor living conditions by providing health and safety repairs for the elderly, disabled, and low-income homeowners in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. At the birth of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Matt gave a plush Jimny Cricket doll to each with the reminder to follow Jimny’s advice, “Remember, let your conscience be your guide.”

Left to cherish his memory is his bride of 61 years, Judy Schorr; his children, Laura Lyden and husband Robert, Matthew Schorr, Jr and wife Carol, Eric Schorr and wife Jody; grandchildren Matthew Schorr lll and wife Meredith, Melissa Lyden, Christopher Schorr, Troy Lyden and fiancé Christine Porter, Elliot Schorr, and Monica Schorr; great-grandchildren Matthew Schorr lV, Bryant Schorr, Lillian Schorr, and Eleanor Schorr, many extended family members and dear friends.

A funeral Mass celebrating Matt’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 2 p.m. at The Church of the Ascension, Virginia Beach. The family will greet friends at the church one-hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Faith Works Coalition, 1385 Fordham Drive, Suite 105-106, Virginia Beach, VA 23464, or a long walk immersed in nature remembering Matt and his love of the outdoors.
