Steven J Hughes was born in September 1978 in Virginia Beach, VA, and died in March, 2023 in Portland, OR, at age 44 from an undetermined medical event.
He is survived by his dad, Wesley Hughes of La Plata, MD; his dad’s long-time fiancée, Esther Corpus; his sister, brother-in-law, and niece, Lisa, Justin, and Daphne Wilde of Towson, MD; and many relatives on his mom’s side who reside in New England and all across the country. Steve was preceded in death by his mom, Eileen P Hughes, and all his grandparents. He will be buried in Virginia Beach on April 3, 2023 at 1 pm at Rosewood Memorial Park, next to his mom and near his paternal grandparents.
Steve was an athlete growing up, playing soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, and swimming. He had a life-long love of sports and followed the Virginia Tech Hokies, Portland Trailblazers, Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens, and Baltimore Orioles. He enjoyed US Soccer, the World Cup, and March Madness. He enjoyed nature, visiting national parks, and walking his beloved rescue golden retriever, Riggs, on the trails in Portland.
Steve graduated from Virginia Tech and found his calling in transportation. He loved his job at TriMet and serving the citizens of Portland. His TriMet supervisor said he was one of the best operators and that he would be sorely missed. Steve was proud to be in a union and loved getting people to and from work every day.
Steve was a kind and hard-working man, and his family misses him very much. In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations in his memory to the national parks or any local animal rescue, as those were causes that were close to his heart.
A Celebration of Life will be held at his sister’s house in which the family will plant a memorial tree in her yard on April 22, 2023.
Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2023 at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach.
