Angela Mary Matusicky Filicko, 94, a long-time resident of Newport News, VA and recently Suffolk, VA, passed away on February 19, 2023, after a brief illness.  She is reunited with her loving husband of 61 years, Ralph Richard Filicko, who left this world in June 2013 but never left her side.

Born on a strawberry farm near Albany, Louisiana, Angela was the 11th of 16 children by Paul and Julianna (Csanyi) Matusicky, turn of the century immigrants from Nagykanizsa, Hungary.  When Angela was six, the family relocated to Cleveland, OH, which was also when the family first began speaking English in the home! In 1947, she graduated with honors from St. Procop High School where she met Ralph, the love of her life. She and Ralph were married on December 1, 1951.

Her marriage to Ralph, a career U.S. Army NCO, led her to reside in several states and France, before settling in Newport News, VA.  After employment as a professional telephone operator in Williamsburg, she found her true calling as a loving mother to four children; cook, gardener, craftswoman, planner, poet, author, storyteller, bird watcher, caregiver, and gamer. Deeply religious, she was a devout Catholic and charter member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in the late 1960s, and a faithful adherent to the parish ministry for most of her life.

Angela was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters, nine brothers, and granddaughter Shelby.  She is survived by her sons Ralph M. Filicko (Kathleen) of Suffolk, and Gerard P. Filicko (Lisa) of Richmond; daughters, Stefanie M. Topp (Raymond) of St. Simons Island, GA, and Sharon M. Kelly (Scott) of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren: Christopher Filicko (Sandi), Julia Bradner (Matt), Alex Filicko (Laura), Jackie Bogdan (Ian), Tanner Hofe (Angeline), Daly Mills (Brian), Aubrey Porcher (Pierce), Matthew Wydman, Hailey Wydman, Coby Topp, and Payton Topp. 12 great-grandchildren: Caleb, Cody, Isaiah, Toby, Coleman, Eliana, Wyatt, Benson, Luke, Oakley, Quinley, and Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Ida Fisher, brother, Daniel “Donny” Matusicky, and many nieces and nephews around the world. Through her family, life lessons, pearls of wisdom, and passions, she has a continuing legacy.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the funeral home followed by a Celebration of her Life Service starting at 11:00 a.m. The family invite guests to join them for a reception at the funeral home after the service. Interment will take place at a private service alongside her husband at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, in Suffolk, VA. The family wishes memorial contributions be made to:
