John Harvey Futrell was born in Ahoskie, NC on December 10, 1950, to the late Clyde Sr. & Ronell Futrell. On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, he entered eternal rest with his loving family by his side.
Although, John enjoyed his peace and serenity, he did not shy away from hard work. John worked for the Newport News Shipyard as a Pipe Fitter until his retirement. He later worked as an Upkeeper for the Williamsburg-James City County Public School system.
John is loved by many. He often went above and beyond for the people he cared for. He was known for being the backbone of his family. Over the years John enjoyed spending time and creating memories with family and friends. He could be found relaxing at home on his porch, watching his grandkids, or enjoying a Washington Redskins game in his man cave that he built.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ronell and Clyde Futrell Sr.; wife, Devon Futrell; daughter, Monica Mitchell; long-term life partner, Mary Carpenter Holden; brothers, James Earl Futrell, Josiah Futrell, Clyde (Bubba) Futrell Jr., and Rev. Rickey Futrell; sisters, Marion Futrell, Shirley Harper, Helen (Sister) Askew, Rev. Annie (Fain) Clemons, and Yvonne Blount; and granddaughter, Tiara Conwell.
His memories will forever be cherished by his children, Melissa Williams (Deshawn), Alvin Graham (Laura), Teona Graham, and Henry Graham; loving granddaughter, Diamonique Conwell who he raised as his own; grandchildren, Terri Gardner (Greg), Terreece, Tymon, Antonio, Mariah, Mazhira, Ya’Sin, Madysen, Ashton, Austin, Aiden, Keon, Javon, Masia, Sy’myia, Arianna, Keith, Monica, Nashira, Kania, and Quayshawn; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Na’lani; brothers, Robert Futrell, Bennie Futrell, and Purnell Futrell; sisters, Betty Cardell, Rev. Alice Bonett, and Julia Jackson (Ann); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at the Historic First Baptist Church of Williamsburg. Livestream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Futrell may be viewed on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the hour of his service. Facial coverings are required for all services.
