NEWPORT NEWS — David Earl unexpectedly passed away on Sunday March 13, 2022 at the age of 41. He was born to Carrie Belinda Payne & David Earl Figley Sr. in Newport News, Virginia. His journey began, and continued, as the world’s most laid back & chill dude. He was a musician, singer and lyricist; he played and sang in a band early on, and kept all of his instruments in his office to play anytime he had downtime or just needed to think. David was the best baby always happy and behaved. But naturally mischievous as a child, as he loved to pick on his little sister; but, as he grew into young adulthood, his role changed. He was there – to rescue her, stand behind her, be her backbone and voice of reason. David was certainly his sister’s protector.
As an adult, David Earl is best described as intricate, knowledgeable and determined. After graduating from Denbigh high School in 1998, David actively served 6 years in the Air Force. In 2010, He obtained his B.S. in Computer Information Systems, then making a reputable name for himself starting with C2 Technologies till 2012, followed by Craig Technologies from 2012-2019. Most recently, as a Courseware Developer with Tipping Point Solutions since 2019. David was an asset in his field and was building his career for an even better future.
David was witty and charismatic. He was different than every other clique, but fit in with them all. David was a funny man and lived to reach that punchline. He was a man of his own, loved by everyone he met. He stood out from the crowd with his good looks and a style literally of his own. He could carry on a conversation with just about anyone, and always saw the good in each person he befriended. David was an exceptional man that held no judgement. He was the best friend anyone could’ve asked for and everyone was better to have had him in their lives.
More than anything David was a family man and the best father. In his earliest years of parenthood, he had the pleasure to be the part of his Step daughter’s life, Skylar, and helped raised her when she was young. Although they grew apart over the years, he cherished her and loved seeing her grow into a beautiful intelligent young woman. David then met his number one best friend when he became a father to his boy Jack. He put every ounce of effort he had towards making sure Jack had the best life, best future and was growing to be the best young man. Together, they shared a passion for everything sports related and David was always by Jack’s side on & off the field. He coached Jack’s soccer and flag football teams, and rode bikes around the neighborhood in the afternoons. He played basketball with him in the backyard and practiced soccer in the front. He included Jack in everything he did each and every day whether it be watching ESPN with the fella’s, business talk about work or making a new Tik Tok & coming up with his next joke. They were also the most diehard LA Rams Fans; never missing a game, they knew every stat about each player, and impatiently awaited every single move the team made. David and Jack were best friends and David lived his life for his Boy.
In 2014, David met the love of his life, Kayla. David and Kayla shared a love for art, music, motorcycles and each other. They valued their differences and knew they made each other better. David and Kayla’s love was a rare love that ran deep. It was never taken for granted; they always reminded each other how special their love was. They were a team, including Jack, and built a home and family over the years. Every obstacle no matter how big or small, David told them “We will figure it out”, and they always did, making it happen together. Every move he made, he did with Kayla in mind, to make things easier, to ensure her comfort, to make her laugh or to relieve her stress. That’s how he showed his love and affection. He always said he wanted “to do this one right” and he sure did, every single day.
David was preceded in death by his Grandparents Donald Figley & Joann Studer, His Uncle Steven Trench and Cousin Andrew Harris.
David Earl leaves behind his Wife and Son, Kayla Jean Via-Figley & Jack Figley; his Mother, Carrie Payne (David) and his Father, David Earl Sr. (Karen), as well as additional Father figures in his life who also helped him to become such a great man, Johnny Gauthier and Joe Roark; His Grandparents, Lewis & Diane Trench; Sisters, Amber Lee (Destiny), Ashley Kotto and Heather Marine; His in-laws, Robbin & Bruce Payton and the largest family of brother & sister in laws that were very close as well; David’s twenty-three nieces and nephews who also held a piece of his heart; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and an amazing group of friends that he considered family too.
David Earl’s Funeral will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at 12:00p.m. at Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Dr. Newport News, Virginia 23606. A Celebration of life will immediately follow at 1 Marina Dr. Newport News, Virginia 23608.
