
WILLIAMSBURG — Elizabeth L. Johnson Pierce, surrounded by the love and support of her family was called home to her eternal resting place on Saturday, February 19, 2022. She was born on December 19, 1940, in Bertie County, North Carolina to the late Elizabeth Johnson Irons and Horace V. Johnson.
Elizabeth was united in holy matrimony to her devoted husband Fleming E. Pierce on March 26, 1967. They were blessed with two children. At an early age, she joined and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church where she served as a youth usher. Later she joined the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where she was a member of the Adult Ushers. Liz remained a member of Mt. Gilead until her death.
Elizabeth graduated as an honor student at John B. Bond High School in 1958. After graduation, she furthered her education at North Carolina Central University and Elizabeth City State University graduating in 1964. She was employed by the Williamsburg-James City County Schools as a teacher at Bruton Heights. She later transferred to the York County Public School system and taught at Magruder retiring after twenty-five years of service.
Elizabeth was a lifetime member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and was a member of the Virginia State Teacher’s Association. Elizabeth enjoyed bowling, traveling, attending to her dogs “Lucky and Buddy”, and working in her yard. Elizabeth was a beautiful, soft-spoken, kindhearted, and loving individual who loved her family, mankind, and trusted in God as she walked through life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fleming E. Pierce; father, Horace V. Johnson; mother, Elizabeth Peele Johnson; and her twin brother, Horace L. Johnson.
Elizabeth’s impressionable life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children Anthony F. Pierce of Germantown, MD and Angela E. Pierce of Williamsburg, VA; grandson, Anthony S. Pierce; aunts, Ollie P. Bond “Aunt Bea”, Coleen P. McGlone, and Pauline Peele; loving sisters-in-law, Ethel L. Johnson and Kaye P. Molley; brother-in-law, Bernard Bowman (Rosalee); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A walkthrough viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at Whiting’s Funeral Home, with the Williamsburg Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Omega Omega Service beginning at 5:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with live stream being available at the start of the service. Interment to follow in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Face coverings and social distancing are required.
