
WILLIAMBURG — Dorothy Louise Gray Savage peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. She was born to the late Martha Jane Reese and Joshua Elijah Gray on April 18, 1929, in Surry, Virginia.
Dorothy was educated in the Surry County School System and accepted Christ at an early age at The Church of all Nations, Spring Grove, Virginia. Later, she joined The Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, Williamsburg, Virginia, where she was active in the Women’s Auxiliary and other ministries. Dorothy loved the Lord and her church and attended faithfully until her health began to fail.
Dorothy was united in Holy matrimony to James Wardell Savage and their union was blessed with six children.
She enjoyed sewing dresses, crocheting blankets, and making many beautiful quilts. Friends and family loved her cakes, canned applesauce and preserves.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Savage; son, Howard Savage; and brother, Obiedie Mckinley Gray.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, five children, Barbara Ramsey of Williamsburg, Virginia, Rita Savage of Spring Grove, Virginia, James Savage Jr. of New York, New York, Roland Savage (Cheryl) of Petersburg, Virginia, and Christina Shackleford (Johnathan) of Toano, Virginia; grandchildren, Mtesa Ramsey (Nereida), Olujimmy Ramsey (Claire), Raheen Davis, Trina Savage, Ronald Savage, and Johnathan Shackleford, Jr.; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Gray Ellis Smith who was reared by Martha and Joshua Gray; uncle, Charles Gray; aunt, Cora Gray; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many caring and loving friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 21, 2022, at Bethel Restoration Center, 6205 Richmond Rd, Williamsburg. Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. Interment to follow in Hickory Grove Memorial Cemetery, Surry. Mrs. Savage may be viewed from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
