
LANEXA — Albert Thomas Slater Sr., 89, of Lanexa VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday February 3, 2022. Albert was born in Lanexa VA on August 30, 1932 to Edward and Susie Slater. His first job was plowing the family land with a team of mules when he was 9 years old. He worked many jobs throughout his life and was never afraid of hard work. Albert’s service to the Lord began when he was 9 years old and continued all the days of his life. He was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church in Lanexa VA. He served the church in various roles throughout his life, including being a deacon for 60 years. Albert grew the largest watermelons in the area and regularly won the largest watermelon contest as well as many other categories in the James City County Fair.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Steven Slater; and two sisters, Iris and Jean. Albert is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Betty Slater; three sons, Albert “Thom” Slater Jr., Jim M. Slater (Bernice) and Lloyd M. Slater (Michele); two daughters, Kimberley Smith (Charles) and Elizabeth Gregor (Willi); three grandchildren, Christina, Mollie and Ricky; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Dylan.
A funeral service will be held 2 PM Sunday at Liberty Baptist Church (the historic church building), Lanexa VA, with burial following in the church cemetery. The family requests that everyone please use all necessary Covid precautions when attending services.
Albert will be missed by family and friends but what a celebration was held in heaven when the Lord said “Welcome home good and faithful servant, welcome home.”
