WILLIAMSBURG — Hugh Thomas Sharp, 91, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2021.
Born in New York City in 1929 to Hugh A. and Anna J. Sharp, he moved to Philadelphia as a child and later attended La Salle College High School and Villanova University.
During his time in college, he entered the U.S. Navy and, having been stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Air Station, understood what “cold” meant. He graduated from Villanova with a degree in chemical engineering.
Hugh had a 35-year career in publishing at McGraw-Hill, rising to SVP prior to retirement. He then joined R.S. Means as V.P. helping with business development until his second retirement. That was followed by starting a successful consulting business, Strategic Advantage, which he ran for several years until his third, and final, retirement.
Upon retirement, he reacquainted himself with golf by joining the Men’s Golf Association at Ford’s Colony Country Club and becoming an avid golfer. He enjoyed the camaraderie as much as the game itself and frequently played three times a week.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and keen insight and inquisitiveness. Not surprisingly, he enjoyed international travel. His most memorable sojourns were to Russia, China and Australia.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elaine, and is survived by brothers, Donald and Eugene; and son, Thomas.
Hugh served as a Eucharistic minister at Saint Bede Catholic Church, and his ashes will be inurned at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 22, in the columbarium at the church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg. The ceremony will be conducted by Monsignor Joseph Lehman assisted by Deacon Francis Roettinger.
