HAMPTON — Levi Wesson, 91, was born Sept. 5, 1929, in Dolphin, Virginia, to the late Bossie and Otelia Wesson. After a short illness, he gained his wings Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, at his home.
Levi, the fourth born of 10 children, was educated in the Brunswick County Public School System. He was baptized and joined the Olive Branch RZUA Church, Lawrenceville, at an early age. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Levi married Ethel Louise Rivers, and to this union, three children were born, Michael Eugene Wesson, Debra Anita Wesson and Sharon Elyse Wesson. Levi relocated his family to Newport News, seeking gainful employment. Later, he married Delphine Wells.
He continued his faith walk at Providence Baptist Church, and later at Miracle Temple Baptist Church, both located in Newport News. He faithfully served on the Usher Board until his health failed. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (now Northrop Grumman) after 40-plus years of service.
Not one known to sit idle, he began working at Cooke Brothers Funeral Chapel. During his retirement years, he became a skilled baker and turned out delicious cakes, pies and banana puddings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bossie and Otelia Wesson; two daughters, Sharon Elyse Wesson Wilson and Harriet McCloud; four brothers, Garland Parham, Chanel, James and Raymond; and one sister, Otelia Lee Wesson Perry.
Levi leaves to mourn his wife, Delphine Wells Wesson; son, Michael Eugene Wesson of Newport News; daughter, Debra Wesson Meekins of Hampton; four sisters, Laura Johnson, Willie Bea Mays (William), Olivia Hicks and Della Doswell of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren, Katrina McCloud, Eboni Richardson (Melvin), Veronica Wesson, Lela Meekins, Michael Wesson II (Amanda) and Cecial Wyrick (Alissa); six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; adopted son and daughter, Vincent and Kim Jones of Hampton; and a host of other relatives and a multitude of treasured friends. Levi touched many lives and will be truly missed by all.
Viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
