HAMPTON — Dr. Melvin Gaddis Green Jr., 72, took wings and left this place to seek peace and joy in the arms of God Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.

He was born Sept. 14, 1948, in Greenville, South Carolina. Melvin was the son of Melvin Sr. and Alice Helen Green. His parents; brother, Charles; and niece preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Green of Hampton; daughters, Jennifer Green of Dallas, Texas, Kimberly Green of Atlanta, Georgia, Anika Baker of Charlotte, North Carlina, and Schaan Baker of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Amaya, Kendall, Kennedy, Gabriel and Kayde; sister, Minnie Alice Green of Virginia Beach; and special caregiver, Lillian Greene, to everything we owe for all her love, support and comfort.

Melvin earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Rockford College. He went on to receive the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 1973.

Following his internship and residence at Eastern Virginia Graduate School, Melvin started practice with his best friend in life, William “Butch” Franklin. Their loyalty and love for each other has lasted the test of time over 46 years. Melvin worked in private practice for over 30 years before joining the Sentara Medical Group. Melvin retired from Sentara in December 2018.

Through the years, Melvin had been very active with his golfing friends. Every Thursday, the phone tree was activated and tee times were confirmed.

Melvin, (aka) Britannia, (aka) Big Dog, was a supportive and loving husband, father and grandfather who gave unselfishly to others.

Melvin and Helen shared 32 years of friendship, love and endless happiness. They shared an unbreakable bond in life, and he is now looking down over family and all nearest to him.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A private funeral service and burial will be held by the family.
