Rosa Delores “Ro-Ro” Taylor Smith, 78, put on her heavenly wings and ascended to her heavenly home, answering the Master’s call at home with family at her bedside Tuesday, June 16, 2020. Her life began June 20, 1941, the beautiful daughter of the late Isiah and Mary Alice Bowman Taylor, in Williamsburg.

Rosa accepted God as Lord over her life and was baptized at Zion Baptist Church Lightfoot, where she was a faithful and dedicated member. She sang in the choir until her health began to fail. Her favorite songs were “Nobody But You” and “I Shall Wear A Crown.” She also enjoyed singing in the choir at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church and helping with the Usher Board.

On Nov. 29, 1958, Rosa married the late Jesse Smith. Together, they were blessed with a baby girl and to raise her son.

“Ro-Ro” or “Ro,” as she was called by many, especially her children, helped raise many children and their children. She was very loving and would do anything to help others, giving the shirt off her back in a time of need. Ro-Ro did not mind telling you what was on her mind, even if you didn’t like it, but she would always be there when you needed her in her own caring and loving way. Ro also enjoyed cooking and made sure there was enough for everybody. She was also considered to be the neighborhood beautician, even burning an ear or two. Ro loved spending time with her family and playing cards. She had a special relationship with each person in her life. She will truly be missed.

Rosa leaves precious memories with her devoted daughters, Jessica Bartlett (Thomas) and Cynthia White; sister, Mildred Taylor; grandchildren, Thomas IV and TaMyiah Bartlett, Ashley Walker and Timberly Travers; three great-grandchildren, Dwayne Travers Jr., Benjamin Walker III and Devi Travers; caregivers, David Gatewood and Jacqueline Jones; friend, Edwina and her family; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Monday, June 22, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 23, at Zion Baptist Church, Williamsburg, with the Rev. Valerie C. Matthews officiating.
