
Danny H. Mitchell Sr., adored father, grandfather, son and brother, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020.
Danny graduated from Hampton High School in 1971, a third-generation Crabber, and then went on to attend Concord College in West Virginia and Old Dominion University. His children and grandchildren continued his legacy and graduated from Hampton High School.
Danny was a pillar of the Hampton High School family, where he served as a football coach since 1979 and the baseball coach since 1985. He also coached Pony League and the American Legion baseball league during the 1980s as well as football at Eaton Jr. High (1974), Kecoughtan High School (1975 to 77) and Poquoson High School (1978). Outside of his time at Hampton High School and other coaching positions, Danny also worked as a firefighter and a deputy sheriff. He was a member of Pine Chapel Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon Nov. 24, 2019.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sindi Mitchell; daughter, Brooke Mitchell-Parr (Charlie Parr); sons, Danny Mitchell Jr. and Matthew Mitchell (Sarah Collie); mother, Joyce Mitchell; sister, Carol Wolsh; brother, Doug Mitchell; granddaughter, Madeleine Parr; grandson, Nicholas Parr; mother-in-law, Betty Brown; sister-in-law, Julia Graham; nieces, Jamie Phillips (Patrick), Jami Graham, Jada Lemon and Cassidy Mitchell; nephew, Joseph Wolsh (Leah); great-niece, Evie Phillips; great-nephews, Ivan Wolsh and Elliot Phillips; and a large extended family.
There will be a public celebration of life at Danny Mitchell Field on the campus of Hampton High School later in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HHS baseball program or Virginia Peninsula Foodbank in Coach Danny Mitchell’s name.
