
Fred Allen Kern, 86, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019. Fred was born in Stone, Kentucky, and raised in various parts of Appalachia Virginia and Kentucky.
He graduated from Coeburn High School and East Tennessee State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He moved to Hampton in 1960, where he worked for the State of Virginia as a tax auditor, retiring with over 40 years of service. He had many hobbies. He never lost his Appalachian roots and was loved by many.
Fred is survived by his four daughters, Karen Hollomon, Kathy Hall, Teresa Warlitner and Terrie Conrad, all of the Peninsula; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and his lifelong companion, Ella Kern.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 23, at Weymouth Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, with military honors.
