Terry Logan Metts, 60, went to be with his heavenly Lord and Savior Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Terry grew up on the Peninsula in Newport News, where he played baseball for Parkview Little League and had wonderful memories of his years at the Boys’ Club on Hilton Boulevard.

Terry played baseball for American Legion Baseball Post 25, and they were three-time state champions. Terry played in the Eastern Virginia Thoroughbred League in 1978 in the World Series. He graduated from Warwick High School in 1976 and graduated from Georgia Southern University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Terry was a walk-on for the Georgia Southern Eagles Baseball team, where he earned the starter position in right field and received a baseball scholarship.

Terry was also an assistant baseball coach for Georgia Southern University. He went on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ and had a ministry at Ohio State University, West Virginia University and the University of South Carolina. Terry went on mission trips to Eastern Europe and lived in Slovakia for a year. Terry traveled throughout Eastern Europe including Vienna, Austria and Switzerland with his ministry through Campus Crusade. He then went on to receive his Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago in 2000.

Terry was the proud owner of George’s Java in Durham, North Carolina, in the historical area near Duke University. He roasted coffee beans and created his own special blends of coffee. Terry’s coffee shop was another ministry he felt led to create. His vision was to have a place one day where pastors could come and study the Word of God on a deeper level. He wanted to provide reference and research books while providing coffee and study groups for those inquiring an understanding of God’s Word.

Terry’s memory is left to be cherished by his siblings, Tony Metts, Kathy Metts Benson, and her husband, Donn, Carol Jean Meisse, and her husband, Dick, Tommy Metts and Kenneth Metts. Terry also leaves his memory to be cherished by his nieces and nephews, Cassidy and Skyler Metts, Hillary Linhart, and her husband, Kenneth, Hannah Cooper and Carrie Benson; and two great-nephews, Jaxson Cushman and Kenneth Linhart lll.

Terry’s memory lives on in his church family at Peninsula Community Chapel, baseball teammates and friends from the Peninsula, college friends and roommates and a host of relatives from Virginia and North Carolina.
