Edward Glen ‘Ed’ Holmes, 75, adventurer who sailed the world

Edward Glen “Ed” Holmes, 75, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, in Virginia Beach. Ed was born Nov. 11, 1942, in Norfolk. He was the only son of Robert and Iva Holmes, who preceded him in death.

He was married to Sarah Killen Holmes for 51 years. Sarah preceded him in death December 2014. He loved her dearly and never fully recovered from her passing.

Ed graduated from Granby High School and Fredrick College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, taught school in the Virginia Beach public schools and at Tidewater Community College. He was a member of the IMPS fraternity.

Ed was a longtime resident of Sandbridge, moving there in 1968 when Sandbridge was an isolated beach community with few year-round residents. He built several homes in Sandbridge, including his current home where he and Sarah spent many happy years. He was an adventurer. Ed traveled and sailed many parts of the world with Sarah.

Ed is survived by his niece, Genny Steier. His sister, Linda Steier, preceded him in death. He is also survived by Sarah’s family, sisters-in-law, Ersel Buckley Sharp (Michael), Alice Ward, Mary Smith (Don) and Katy Killen; brother-in-law, Joseph Killen (Donna); and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Sandbridge Dunes Community Room, 204 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach. The Community Room is on the first floor. Enter the building by the blue striped awnings. Use entry code 444# to access the building, and then again to enter the elevator. Go to the first floor, and then out to the interior walkway; you will see the terrace and Community Room. The Community Room is sponsored by Ed’s IMPS brother, Larry Stallings, 757-771-4700. Parking is available in the city lot across from the Sandbridge Dunes in front of the Sandbridge Market.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad.
