William J. Scarper, 96, retired fire chief at Dam Neck Naval Base

William J. Scarper, 96, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, surrounded by his three children, Johnnie Mae Burbage, William J. Scarper and Richard W. Scarper. A native of Chincoteague, he spent his adult life in Virginia Beach.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 70 years, Ardie Mae Scarper, and three sisters. He is survived by three children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He served his country well in Europe during World War II in the U.S. Army, 94th Infantry Division. Our father never spoke of the war. He once commented to do so, “would require too much from his soul.” He retired as fire chief, Dam Neck Naval Base.

You will be missed, Dad.

A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
