On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, Alice Briggs Johnson, 89, after a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ as her Savior, crossed over into her eternal rest. She peacefully passed away at her home surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Columbia, Va., the daughter of the late Mollie and William Henry Briggs Sr.
At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was a faithful member of CBC World Ministries (Chickahominy Baptist Church) until her health began to fail. She retired from the Food Service Department of the College of William & Mary after 45 years of untiring and dedicated service.
Mrs. Johnson was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Johnson Sr.; brothers, Marshall and William Briggs Jr.; and sisters, Rosalie Lewis and Helen Briggs.
She leaves to cherish her blessed memories her loving children, Raymond Jr. (Linda), Clara Brown-Holloway (Kenneth), Darnell (Tracie) and Michael and the Rev. Dianne Ashton (Eric), with whom she made her home; sister, Minnie Fowler; sister-in-law, Martha Briggs; her loving granddaughter, Tanea Jones, who was her faithful and dedicated caregiver; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many other loving relatives and a host of caring friends.
Mrs. Johnson may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 29, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 31, at CBC World Ministries (Chickahominy Baptist Church) with Apostle Corwin R. Hammond Sr. officiating. Family and friends will assemble at 3309 Chickahominy Road by 10 a.m. on Saturday.
