David Allen “Dave” Gootee, 77, husband of Agnes Gootee, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018, surrounded by his family at his home in Seaford, Va. They were married almost 54 years ago at Blessed Sacrament Church, Worcester, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his mother, V. Helen Gootee; father, William O. Gootee; and brother, William J. Gootee.

Survivors include Clara Gootee Arnold, Page Gootee Byrne, Helen Gootee Spencer and Sarah Gootee; and one son-in-law, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 17 nieces, six nephews, eight sisters-in-law and six brothers-in-law.

Mr. Gootee was a 1963 Virginia Military Institute (VMI) graduate and received a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Dave’s career spanned 40 years, and he served four military branches, U.S. Marines at VMI, officer in the U.S. Air Force, federal employee for the U.S. Navy and federal employee for the U.S. Army. He retired as a federal employee in 2001 from the Central Intelligence Agency.

Dave was a highly-spirited, community-minded individual. He volunteered as an EMT-C at York County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad and Yorkshire Volunteer Fire Department, Manassas, Va., and with several hospital emergency rooms for more than 35 years. He also enjoyed rebuilding antique automobiles for himself and for friends and family.

Dave was a six-year recipient of the left ventricle assist device (LVAD).

A memorial service for Dave will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 24, at Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Yorktown.
