
William James Halsey, 84, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at Sentara Hospice House with family at his side after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
He was born on Dec. 12, 1932, in Hertford, N.C., to the late James V. and Inez Halsey. Also preceding him in death were his loving wife of 52 years, Doris Hubbard Halsey; and sister, Laura A. Halsey.
Bill served our country in the U.S. Army and was also a member of the U.S. Naval Air Reserve. He retired from Piedmont Aviation after a 34-year career. He was a fan of the Washington Redskins and Nascar driver Richard Petty. Bill’s family will miss his love, strength, courage and entertaining stories.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Susan Kirton (Lenny), Dana Haycox (Chris), LuAnn Halsey and Scott Halsey; grandchildren, Brandee McBride (Mike), Taylor Haycox (Tricia), Holly McClintock (Travis), Christopher Kirton, Jordan Haycox, Lyndsey Kirton and Whitney Haycox; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Jeannette Gimbert; brothers, Louis Halsey (Ruth) and Lynn Alan Halsey (Ruth); and many nieces, nephews and friends, including special friend, Mary Vanderploeg.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the funeral home with entombment to follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.
