Rosa Renesis Mengulas, 94, beloved Norfolk Pancake House manager

Rosa R. Mengulas passed away peacefully on Aug. 28, 2016. She was 94.

She was born in Norfolk, Va., on Jan. 22, 1922 to Nicholas J. Renesis and Kevy Antonotou Renesis. She graduated from Maury High School in 1940. She was married to Augustus “Gus” Mengulas on May 1, 1949. Rosa lived in Richmond with Gus and worked for the civil service before returning to Norfolk in 1963 to work for her brother, Jerry N. Renesis, at the Pancake House in Norfolk. She remained there for 40 years before retiring.

Rosa was known by many through her years at the Pancake House as the always well-dressed lady who ran the store for her brother. She made many friends over the years at the Pancake House and was admired and loved by all who crossed her path. She was a caring, loving daughter, wife, sister and aunt. She was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk and was a member of the Hellenic Women’s Club and Philoptochos Society in the church.

Rosa is survived by her nephew Nicholas B. Renesis, his wife Karen, their children Jerry, Lexie and Katie and by her cousin Spiro “Spike” Coutavas, his wife Dianna and their son Yianni as well as many wonderful friends, who were like family to her for many years. She was predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Kevy Renesis, her brother Jerry N. Renesis, her husband Gus P. Mengulas and her cousin Athena Coutavas, who was more like a sister than a cousin to her.

A Trisagion service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31  in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 1501 Colonial Ave. Her funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 1 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk.
