Judith Crawford ‘Judy’ Johnson, 76, passionate about instilling patriotism and love of country in young people

Judith Crawford “Judy” Johnson, 76, of Dare, passed away comfortably on January 6 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Judy was born in Asheville, NC, to the late Wilbur H. and Elizabeth Neilson Crawford. The family moved to the Peninsula in the early 1940s, and Judy graduated in 1957 from Hampton High School.

She was married for 54 years to her devoted husband Samuel D. Johnson, who passed away in 2012. A resident of York County since 1967, Judy loved history and her community. After working at NASA Langley Research Center, she worked as a teacher’s aide at Dare Elementary School for many years and later joined the staff of the York County Registrar’s Office.

She was a proud member of the Comte de Grasse Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and a longtime dedicated local, state and national senior leader of the National Society, Children of the American Revolution. She was passionate about instilling patriotism and love of country in young people.

Her other passions in life were gardening, baking, genealogy and, above all, her family.

Judy was also active for many decades in numerous roles at Providence United Methodist Church, where she cherished time spent with her friends in her Methodist Women’s Circle.

Judy is survived by her son David Johnson and wife Jennifer of Henrico, her brother James Crawford of Dare, sister-in-law Jewel Moon of Hampton, in-laws James H. and Elouise Johnson of Newport News, countless beloved nieces and nephews, and the four people in this world she loved the most, her grandchildren: Samuel, William, Timothy & Caroline Johnson, of Henrico.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 11, at Providence United Methodist Church with Rev. C. Douglas Akers officiating; Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to Providence United Methodist Church, 113 Old Dare Road, Yorktown, VA 23692, or to The Alzheimer’s Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter. 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, Virginia 23502.
