Martha Herden Dowling, 91, German immigrant named Volunteer of the Year, 1994

Martha Herden Dowling, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at the age of 91.

Martha was a German immigrant, coming to America with her parents in the early 1930s and settling in New York City. She was later employed in Hanover Bank, New York and moved to the Yorktown with her late husband Vincent Joseph Dowling Jr. in 1954. Martha was an active volunteer with the York Library and Bargain Box and was Volunteer of the Year in 1994. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent and a brother, Rudolph Herden.

She is survived by her son, Kevin Vincent Dowling and his wife Millicent, of Yorktown; a granddaughter, Alison Donkel and her husband Rick, of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and great-grandsons, Marcus and Ethan. She is also survived by a nephew, Bruce Herden, of West Point and a great-niece, Jessica Malley, of Yorktown.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at the chapel of Amory Funeral Home with the Rev. Carleton Bakkum officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
