Carl Janow, 92, NASA electrical/aeronautical engineer who worked on many Apollo projects

Carl Janow, of Virginia Beach, died Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at his residence. He was 92.

He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Rhinebeck, New York, to Rebecca Gazen and Morris Janow.

Carl graduated from Clarkson University School of Technology in Potsdam, New York, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a radio airman during WWII and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army/Air Corps.

He met his wife, Irene Katz, at a dance in Newport News and they were married in March 1952 in Norfolk. Soon after, they moved to Falls Church and began their family. Carl worked at NASA Headquarters as an electrical/aeronautical engineer and worked on many of the Apollo projects. The Janows raised their family in Falls Church and were active in the Jewish Community. Carl was a member of Congregation Beth El in Norfolk.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his sisters, Rosie Gazer and Esther Bernstein and a brother Gordon Janow.

Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years, Irene Katz Janow; daughters, Marcia Kay (Bruce), of Bethesda, Maryland and Leora Drory (Nathan), of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Sara, Erika, Danit and Aaron; sister-in-law, Linda Janow; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2015, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Rabbi Jeffrey Arnowitz.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to The Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, Multiple Sclerosis and/or Congregation Beth El.
