Capt. Edwin William McLaughlin II, 80, former Tidewater Construction Company president

Capt. Edwin William McLaughlin II, of Virginia Beach, died Sept. 29, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was 80.

He was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania in 1935. He graduated from Forty Fort High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and was a registered engineer in the State of Virginia.

Capt. McLaughlin joined the U.S. Navy in 1958 and served 23 years in the Civil Engineering Corps (CEC) and Navy Seabees. He was a decorated veteran serving in Vietnam and locations around the world. He retired from the Navy in 1982 and was awarded the Navy Legion of Merit Award.

He began work at Tidewater Construction Company and later became president of the company, retiring in 2007 after 25 years. During his engineering career, Capt. McLaughlin was responsible for many significant civil engineering works, including the Coleman Bridge replacement in Yorktown and the Cooper River Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina.

Capt. Ed was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his sister, Catherine McLaughlin, of Rock Hall, Maryland; brother, George McLaughlin, of Great Oaks, Maryland; son, Ed McLaughlin III, of Virginia Beach and grandson, Liam McLaughlin IV, of Virginia Beach; daughter, Virginia Hawley, son-in-law, John Hawley and grandsons, John Hawley, Brendan Hawley and Owen Hawley, all of Virginia Beach; son, Philip McLaughlin, of Carrboro, North Carolina; and his sailing mate and devoted companion, Marlissee Flowers, of Virginia Beach.

Capt. Ed was an avid sailor. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends. He will be sorely missed.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 10, 2015, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach.
