Melville Bryson Moore Sr., of Williamsburg, died peacefully Aug. 7, 2015, at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was 64.
His life’s journey began on May 17, 1951, in Frederick, Maryland. He was the son of Katharine Alma Moore and the late James Moore Sr.
Mr. Moore, also referred to as “Bryson,” honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam and did multiple overseas tours.
During Bryson’s military career, he earned numerous awards and decorations such as the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Expert Infantryman Badge and many others.
After devoting and dedicating a total of 22 years of service to his country, Bryson retired at Fort Eustis in 1990. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #34. He was also one of the founding members of the Masonic Lodge No. 27 A.F & A.M.
Bryson was well known and loved by his family, friends and community. He had a very big heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed assistance. Bryson enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and having countless hours of conversation about his life experiences. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, veteran and friend to many and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and adored him.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Moore Sr.; older brother, Private First Class James Moore Jr.; godmother, Dorothy Brown; and maternal and paternal grandparents.
He leaves to cherish his loving and precious memories his devoted wife of 40 years, Su In Moore; sons, Melville Bryson Moore Jr. and James Kenneth Moore, both of Williamsburg; daughters, Susan Tyrice Moore (Ryan), of Portsmouth, Sonya Darleane Moore Thompson (Dimethus), of Chesapeake and Selena Young Moore, of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Shawn Kenneth Johnson, Dimethus Jaward Thompson Jr., Ryan Nicholas Johnson II and Ahmir Bryson Moore; sister, Alma Dorothea Moore Palm (Charles Palm Jr.), of Frederick, Maryland; nephews, Kevin Maurice Palm (Daniella) and Curry Tyrone Palm (Penny); nieces, Antonia Renee Palm Snowden (James Snowden) and Alicia Denise Palm-Cartnail (Jeffrey); aunts, Kathleen Cox Hall, of Baltimore and Ruth B. Brown and Corinthia Brown, both of Frederick, Maryland.; uncles, Charles R. Brown and Bernard Brown, both of Frederick, Maryland; special and close brothers, with whom he served in the Army, Ronald Marrs and Earl Haliday Sr.; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
Mr. Moore may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Family and friends will assemble by 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at 1115 Springfield Road for a service beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment, with full military honors will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
