Allen Woodger Himes, 88, Navy Laboratories associate director

Allen Woodger Himes, of Williamsburg, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the age of 88.

Allen was the beloved husband of Kay Himes (Silber). Born Aug. 9, 1926, in Odessa, Missouri, he was the sixth child of the late Gordon Allen Himes and Roberta Bryant Himes. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Darlene Hickman (1985) and a son, Paul Allen Himes.

Allen was a graduate of Los Angeles High School, UCLA, The University of California (Berkeley) and American University and a proud alumnus of Pepperdine University. He was trained as a mechanical engineer and retired from the Office of Naval Research after 34 years as a federal employee. He was a member of the Senior Executive Service and served as associate director of Navy Laboratories.

Allen was an enthusiastic player and watcher of tennis and a devoted lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, Kay, he is survived by his daughter, Patti Ann Himes, of Searcy, Arkansas; three grandsons, Patrick, William and Michael Looney; three great-grandchildren; one stepson; seven step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2015, at the Williamsburg Church of Christ. Burial and a brief graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015, at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.

Donations may be made in Allen’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
