Vivian Julette Gore died Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at the age of 83. She joined her parents in Jesus’s embrace.
She was born in 1931 to parents Raymond and Naomi Gore. Vivian married Cletus Homer Somers Jr. in 1950. One year later, they welcomed a son, Rex, who was followed by daughters Deborah and Cynthia. One of Vivian’s greatest acts of love was to instill in each child the desire to seek higher education. She felt blessed that her children achieved successful careers in chemistry, nursing and industrial engineering.
Vivian had fond memories of Culpeper High School, where she made high marks in arithmetic. Her math skills were valued for many years at Triplett Milling Company, where she managed accounts and assisted customers. In their retirement years, Vivian and C.H. moved to Deltaville and then York County. While living in York County, Vivian had the joy of seeing her granddaughters, Allison and Meredith Popernack, before and after school.
An avid crocheter, Vivian completed dozens of blankets and doilies and collected hundreds of crochet patterns. Vegetable gardening and canning filled many summer evenings. Irises, gladiolus, sunflowers and begonias frequented her flower gardens. St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Culpeper held a special place in Vivian’s heart as her grandparents participated in the founding of the congregation and future generations continue to worship there.
Vivian is survived by C.H., her husband of 64 years; her daughters, Deborah Finger and Cynthia Popernack (Thomas Popernack); two granddaughters, Allison and Meredith Popernack; and brother, John Gore (Judith Gore). She was preceded in death by her son, Rex Somers.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at St Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1200 Old Rixeyville Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Luke’s memorial fund.
