Horace Cecil Kirkman, 81, retired 26-year US Army chief master sergeant

Horace Cecil Kirkman died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at the age of 81.

A resident of the York County area since 1975, Cecil was born in Greensboro, North Carolina and grew up in Gastonia, North Carolina. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and retired honorably as chief master sergeant after serving for 26 years.

Cecil was preceded in death by his son, Cecil; his sisters, Ruby Russell and Margaret Hamilton; and his parents, Lilly and James Kirkman.

He is survived by Sengul, his wife of 52 years; sons, John, James and his husband, Jack Liike; grandchildren, Noah and Mia Kirkman; his sister, Dorothy Fore and her husband, Dub; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cecil was an avid football fan and loved his Hokies. He attended numerous games at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and when his health did not allow him to continue to do travel, he would follow them on TV from home. He also loved to travel; he and Sengul made many cross-country and overseas trips. His greatest love was his family and friends. His warm, generous and loving heart will be greatly missed.

Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
