Pauline Boyd Godfrey Dartez, of Yorktown, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Riverside Doctor’s Hospital in Williamsburg. She was 89.
She was born May 21, 1925, in Jeffersonville, Ind., the eldest child of William Lee and Nola Jones Godfrey. She married her husband, Amos Dartez, in 1949 at Fort Smith, Ark.
Due to having both a father and a husband with careers in the U.S. Army, Mrs. Dartez spent much of her life moving from one Army post to another, both in the United States and abroad. It was a lifestyle both challenging and rewarding and she especially relished her experiences living abroad.
Before having children, Mrs. Dartez worked for the U.S. Civil Service. Later in life, she became the bookkeeper and office manager for the wholesale distribution business she and her husband established after his retirement from the Army. After her husband’s death in 1971, Mrs. Dartez worked for several years for the Navy Relief Society in Arlington.
She later moved to North Augusta, S.C. to be near her parents and sister and subsequently moved to the Peninsula 18 years ago to be near her children and grandchildren.
She was an active member of several Lutheran churches over the years. Most recently, she was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Yorktown. Above all else, she was a loving, devoted and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.
She was preceded in death by two children, Edna Nola and Randy Rene Dartez.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Paulette Holden, of York County, Linda Samuel (Jim), of New Kent County and Jamie Dartez (Vickie), of Dallas; grandchildren, Angela, Jason (Kristen) and Jennifer Holden; great-granddaughter, Maya Holden; sister, Virginia Wilcox, all of whom live locally; and her beloved pet, Daisy.
She will be laid to rest with her husband and children in Arlington National Cemetery on a date yet to be determined.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption or St. Mark Lutheran Church.
