Lois June (Roberts) Simpson, who resided in the Tabb area of Yorktown for the last 60 years, died Friday, May 23, 2014, at Mary Immaculate Hospital. She was 79.
She was born in Covington, graduated from Boiling Springs High School and attended Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church who loved and served her church family for over 50 years.
In 1953 she was blessed to be an integral part of the founding of Grace Bible Camp in Clifton Forge. The camp is a non-denominational facility focused on reaching young children with the love of Jesus. In 1974 Grace Bible Camp moved to Goshen.
In addition to kids’ summer camps, the camp now host retreats, church functions and operates all year long. She loved to share her passion for Grace Bible Camp with everyone she met! Many folks referred to her as the “Pecan Lady,” which was her way of fundraising to assure that every child, regardless of finances, could go to camp and hear about Jesus. The camp has now been sharing Jesus for over 60 years.
Mrs. Simpson was a devoted and faithful wife and mother, an involved grandmother and cherished friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John William Simpson; daughter, Angela; son, Timothy; parents, Edwin and Polly Roberts; and sister, Jean Wallace.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah June Jutras and her husband, Kenny; son, John William Simpson, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda; sister, Barbara Berry; grandchildren, Chad, Karissa, Tyler, Daniel and Casey; and great-grandsons, Chase and Sawyer.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at Bethel Baptist Church, 1004 Yorktown Rd., Yorktown. A celebration of Mrs. Simpson’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the church with Rev. Doug Echols, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A reception with light refreshments will be served in fellowship hall following the graveside service.
