Dr. Rene Dirk Koun, Jr., 82, oral surgeon in Newport News over 40 years

Dr. Rene Dirk Koun, Jr., of Williamsburg, died March 29, 2014, at the age of 82.

He was born in Rumson, N.J., the second son of Ann Frances and Rene D. Koun’s four boys. The Koun family lived in many different places but growing up as a youth at The United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. was Mr. Koun’s favorite.

He was a proud alumnus of The University of Notre Dame and also graduated from Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his training in oral surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in New York and New York University. He practiced in Newport News for over 40 years.

He belonged to numerous oral and maxillofacial societies. He was a member of the James River Country Club, The University Club in New York and the Warwick Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John N. Koun.

He is survived by his wife, Diane White Koun, whom he met and married in New York; daughters, Christina K. McCoy, her husband, Tim and their sons, Cole and Jack and Melinda K. Smith, her husband, Jody and their daughters, Addison, Ellie and Perry, all of Richmond; and brothers, Cornelius J. Koun and Michael J. Koun.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. April 2, 2014, at The William and Mary Catholic Campus Ministry (formerly known as St. Bede Church) at 10 Harrison Avenue, Williamsburg. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Virginia Living Museum, the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
