Adele Nowell Smith, 78, embarked on her most excellent adventure after a lifetime of faith, love, laughter, and service. Adele was born in Augusta, GA, and was a true southern belle.
She was preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Dr. James H. Nowell, Sr., and her mother, Elizabeth P. Nowell.
She is lovingly survived by her husband of 49 years, Robert E. Smith, Jr.; her children, Lauren S. Flora and her husband, Adam Flora, along with their children, Calder and Riley; and R. Tabb Smith and his wife, Jennifer, along with their children, Reagan, Peyton, and Luke. She is also survived by her brother, John L. Nowell, and his wife, Kathy; and her brother, James H. Nowell, Jr., and his wife, Patty; nephews Jason Nowell and Josh Nowell (Emily), and great-nephews Jackson and Jett.
Adele attended Presbyterian College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. Teaching was her calling, and she found immense joy in teaching math to middle and high school students as well as sharing her faith through Sunday School.
She lived with an adventurous spirit, a steadfast faith in God, and a heart that found joy in life’s simple pleasures. A gifted storyteller, she had a way of making people laugh, reflect, and appreciate life’s everyday blessings. She found her greatest joy in opening her home, creating traditions, and, most importantly, spending time with family and friends.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. She shared God’s love not only through her words but through her actions – welcoming others, supporting those in need, and living each day with hope, grace, and unwavering trust in God. She had a remarkable ability to find God’s blessings even in life’s hardest moments, and she made sure those around her recognized them too.
Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of the Lord.
Her legacy is one of open doors, open arms, enduring traditions, and a faith that inspired everyone blessed to know her.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Brett Reed Memorial Presbyterian Church at P.O. Box 787, West Point, VA 23181.
