The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of Thursday’s murder-suicide as 74-year-old Mildred Baldwin, who was shot to death by her son-in-law, 53-year-old Richmond resident Marvin J. Bowen.
YPSO Lt. Dennis Ivey said Bowen may have been suffering from mental problems.
Deputies responded to reported shots fired at the 100 block of Runaway Lane near Yorktown Elementary School at about 2:09 p.m. Thursday, where they found two people dead in the driveway.
Both bodies were found just outside the garage door. Nobody else was home at the time of the incident. Baldwin lived at the residence.
Baldwin’s husband, Bradley Eugene Baldwin, died in May after “an extended period of declining health,” according to his obituary. The Baldwins left behind two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Baldwin is the second homicide victim in York County in 2013. The first was 24-year-old Devon Coates, who was shot to death in his Yorktown apartment in June. Deputies arrested 28-year-old William E. Burks of Lackey in connection to that crime.
