YORKTOWN — York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office (YPSO) has issued warrants for a 22-year-old man in connection to the shooting of a 3-year-old child.
On Wednesday, March 23, the following warrants were taken out for Canaan Lamont Fleming: shooting into an occupied dwelling, maiming, two counts of child abuse, and reckless handling of a firearm.
At 3 a.m. the same day, York County’s Emergency Communications Center received a call from Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News that a 3-year-old child was the victim of a shooting. The child was brought to the hospital by a family member with what were later determined to be non-life-threatening injuries.
When YPSO arrived at the victim’s residence, located at the 7400 block of George Washington Memorial Hwy. (Route 17), deputies were able to locate the firearm that was used. The department reports that Fleming lives in the same residence as the victim.
