WILLIAMSBURG — Lafayette High School will be performing “Newsies” April 17-19 for its Spring Musical this year.

Suzan McCorry is directing and chose the show, in part, due to its popularity. But the director also feels it is a good show for the community and families, featuring engaging music, dynamic dancing, and speaks of resilience and the spirit of youth.

“[The story is] strong and powerful, and [the students] are the upcoming young adults that are going to drive our future,” McCorry explained.

The two leads for the show are Rachel Herrick, who plays Catherine Flummer, and JD Lawrence, who plays Jack Kelly, both seniors at Lafayette High School. In addition, Lafayette’s principal and a few teachers will also be making appearances in the performances.

“It’s honestly such a good vibe with the material being so fun and so filled with energy, and it still sends a message, as fun as it is and as funny as it is, its an important and powerful message and it’s just exciting to be able to do that for people in the community,” said Lawrence.

Over 70 people are involved in the production. McCorry takes pride in the school’s community partners who assist with the production and its strong connection to the community. That community includes not just parents but also businesses and organizations that help.

  • April 19 at 2 p.m.
