NEWPORT NEWS — On Wednesday, Oct. 19, Newport News – Williamsburg Airport (PHF) celebrated the first of many Avelo Airlines planes to land on its runway with the launch of the airline’s nonstop service from the Peninsula to both Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
“Newport News was a really great airport for us to partner with because they got all the fixings of what could be a really big airport,” said Avelo Airlines Communications Manager Courtney Goff in an interview with WYDaily. “It lets us come into an area where you don’t have to cross a bridge or go over the tunnel. We can keep people in their local airport, where they can easily park, or Uber, where you can get out of your car and easily go through the airport and be at your gate in 10 minutes. It’s perfect for our customers.”
Avelo Airlines currently has 11 Boeing 737 planes in operation, and has plans to add an additional two 737s to its fleet by the end of the year, and an additional two to three more in the first quarter of 2023, Goff told WYDaily.
“Everyone in Hampton Roads, the Peninsula, and Newport News has been really great,” said Goff. “We’ve formed really great partnerships that allow us to really be collaborative when we’re talking about advertising, when we’re talking about how we want to run our operations, and when we’re talking about flight schedules. It makes it really great when you have a partner that’s really amenable to both sides.”
Avelo Airlines goal is to offer convenience with low fares and non-stop flights, according to the airline. The introductory price for Thursday and Sunday flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale from Newport News – Williamsburg Airport starts at $49, one way.
