STATEWIDE — As New Year’s Eve approaches, the Virginia State Police (VSP) wishes to remind motorists to drive responsibly during the holiday season and throughout the year.

“Virginia is on pace to have more fatal crashes in 2021 than in 2020, which was, unfortunately, a record breaking year. But, I have faith that Virginians will do the right thing this holiday season,” said Col. Gary T. Settle, the superintendent for VSP. “During Thanksgiving, Virginia saw a record low number of fatal crashes – the lowest in more than a decade. Virginians proved that they know what to do and how to be responsible on the roadways. Let’s keep the momentum going through the New Year and start 2022 off on the right foot.”

Many of the traffic deaths during the holiday season are noted as alcohol-related. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 837 crash fatalities nationwide in December 2019 that were attributed to drunk driving.

“Remember, drinking and driving or being impaired in any way is never an option,” says Settle. “Celebrating can mean different things to different people but it should never include driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.”

VSP stresses that anyone who imbibes during New Year’s Eve celebrations, should make arrangements for alternate ways to get home.

  • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver or call a friend, family member, taxi or use public transportation.
  • If you know someone has been drinking, do not let them drive. Help by making other arrangements to get home.
  • While driving, remain alert for other motorists who may be driving under the influence. If you see someone who might be driving while impaired, do not hesitate to dial #77 and notify the nearest Virginia State Police Emergency Communications Center. Your actions could save someone’s life.
