STATEWIDE — In an effort to combat drinking in the underage and high risk communities, the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) has awarded more $75,000 in grants to community organizations across the Commonwealth.
The grants come in response to studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that show 60 percent of adults in the United States report drinking more since the beginning of the pandemic.
The ten organizations who awarded the grants proposed projects that will try to prevent and reduce overconsumption of alcohol through video campaigns featuring local musicians and alcohol educations courses for college students.
The grant winners come from all around the state, including the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board and Hampton University. The organizations will team up with the ABC’s Education and Prevention Division staff to bring their proposals to reality.
“It is the mission of Virginia ABC’s Education and Prevention Division to eliminate underage and high-risk drinking by building the capacity for communities to educate individuals and prevent alcohol misuse,” said Virginia ABC Chief Executive Officer Travis Hill. “One of the many ways we do so is through this grant program and the financial support and partnership it provides. We are looking forward to working with these grantees to positively impact the communities in which they work.”
