Since 1953, the National Hurricane Center has annually issued names for the Atlantic tropical storms. These names are strictly regulated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization.
Tropical storm names are generally rotated and recycled every six years. For example, the list that is used for 2021 will be reused in 2027. The only time that a name will rotate off the reoccurring list is when a storm was considered to be so costly or deadly that it would be inappropriate to use its name for future storms.
According to the National Hurricane Center, tropical storms are given names in order to avoid the cumbersome latitude-longitude identification methods. This makes it easier to exchange pertinent storm information between all of the weather stations, coastal bases, and ships at sea.
