Driver killed in Sunday morning crash

NEWPORT NEWS — Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed a person and injured two others early Sunday.

It happened at around 2:29 a.m. on southbound Interstate 664 at exit 5 (Jefferson Avenue) in Newport News.

A preliminary investigation by State Police indicated that a Kia Stinger crossed into the path of a Nissan Altima, collided with the Altima and pushed the vehicle into the guardrail.

The momentum of the impact caused the Altima to roll over and land on top of the Kia, according to State Police.

The driver of the Kia was killed instantly.

The driver and passenger of the Altima were taken to a hospital with what authorities described as non-life -threatening injuries.

State Police did not immediately release further information about the crash, citing an open investigation.
