HAMPTON — This city’s youth will get the chance to find summer jobs through the city’s summer youth employment program.
The program is a chance for the city’s departments and local businesses to come together to give young people who live in Hampton the chance to work a summer job, said Synethia White, program manager for the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities.
It will run from June 18 to Aug. 24 and begin with a training session to teach participants job and life skills such as conflict management, how to call in sick, customer service skills and more, White said.
Each summer the program holds 80 students who are at least 16 years old by July 1 and two college interns.
The interns provide leadership to the students of the program and help get the program started.
Hampton native Brianna Howard from Virginia Commonwealth University saw the internship as a great opportunity to help the youth and learn about city government.
Howard said a family member participated in the program (while in high school) and that’s part of why she applied for the internship.
Howard’s interdisciplinary major focuses on urban planning, political science and sociology. She hopes that after she graduates next year she’ll be able to work with at risk youth.
