JAMES CITY COUNTY – The James City County Board of Supervisors officially proclaimed April 19-25 as National Library Week, highlighting the vital role libraries play fostering education, community connection, and intellectual freedom.

During its last board meeting on April 14, board member, John McGlennon, recognized the Williamsburg Regional Library and its staff for their contributions to the community, emphasizing libraries as spaces that “spark creativity, fuel imagination, and inspire lifelong learning.”

The proclamation noted that libraries serve as “vibrant community hubs”, connecting residents with knowledge , technology and cultural resources while promoting civic engagement and critical thinking. It also underscored their commitment to providing free and equitable access to materials and services for all individuals.

“During this week, we encourage  all residents to visit our library, explore resources, and celebrate all the ways that the library helps communities find joy,” said McGlennon.

The resolution also highlighted the broader impact of libraries, including support for job seekers, entrepreneurs and lifelong learners, as well as their role in protecting intellectual freedom.

WRL Director Sandy Towers expressed appreciation for the recognition and community support.

“It is a pleasure to serve as the library director and to serve a community that values its library services,” said Towers. “We really appreciate the community support.”

She adds that “As a regional system, next year will be our 100th year of celebrating regional library systems.”

National Library Week is observed annually across the United States and this year carries the theme “Find Your Joy,” encouraging residents to explore the many resources and opportunities  available  through their local libraries.
