WILLIAMSBURG — The Great Decisions 2026 Lecture series, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, will move to the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists on Ironbound Road for its new season beginning in February.
“When the renovations planned for the Williamsburg library were in flux, we made the decision to change locations,” explained chairperson Dennis Litalien. “Although we have had many years of wonderful experiences with the library, the uncertainty of renovations made us decide to change venue. The new location offers several benefits, including more parking, easy accessibility, an expansive lobby for socializing and improved AV capabilities.”
According to The League of Women Voters of Williamsburg Area, WUU often hosts community events like the lecture series. “Democracy is a spiritual practice in our faith. We are grateful others are so engaged in our shared civic duties,” explained Rev. Jude Geiger.
The League of Women Voters said the Great Decision program is based on the work of the Foreign Policy Association. The FPA’s program, which has been in existence for 60 years, provides background information and policy options for the eight critical foreign policy issues facing America, and it publishes a briefing book to serve as the focal text for discussion groups across the country.
The League of Women Voters of Williamsburg Area notes it has sponsored a lecture series as a key component of its civic education mission for 44 years. It brings in foreign policy experts and gives the community an opportunity to ask questions and socialize with other community members. Each registration for the Williamsburg Great Decision series includes one copy of the FPA’s briefing book.
“The advantage of the local lectures,” Litalien said, “is that speakers can share new
information that may have occurred in foreign policy since the subjects were originally
published in the FPA briefing book in January. Also, audience members can clarify
concerns by asking questions of the speakers.”
The lectures are held on Tuesday mornings in February and March. Registration
opens this month, so that planners can order enough of the briefing books, which will be
available for pickup in January.
“We plan to use the Stryker Center downtown to distribute the books,” Litalien said.
The public is invited to attend Great Decisions 2026 every Tuesday morning in February
and March from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Registration is required, and presentations will be
held both in-house at Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists on Ironbound Road and
remotely via Zoom.
“We are excited to be in the WUU for 2026! The staff has been so welcoming, and it really checks all the boxes for our needs: large and spacious with a big area for gathering for coffee and cookies prior to the lectures and plenty of parking,” said co-chair Abra Smith.
