JAMES CITY COUNTY — The James City County Police Department announced that speed camera equipment will be installed in designated school zones over the coming days.
According to JCCPD, Blue Line Solutions LLC, the county’s Automated Speed Enforcement vendor, has completed the necessary permitting to begin installing the equipment. Installation work will occur during daytime hours and will involve signage, radar devices and camera hardware along roadways near several schools.
The ASE program was authorized by the Board of Supervisors in September of last year through an agreement with BLS, and is designed to improve traffic safety in school zones by using camera technology to detect and cite speeding violations, according to JCCPD.
The following schools have been designated for ASE installation:
- Toano Middle School
- Norge Elementary School
- Stonehouse Elementary School
- D.J. Montague Elementary School
- Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School
- James River Elementary School
- Lafayette High School
The program is expected to go live with the start of the 2025–26 Williamsburg-James City County school year, which begins on Aug. 25. A 30-day warning period will follow the activation of the program. During this period, drivers who violate speed limits in designated zones will receive warning notices by mail instead of citations, according to JCCPD.
The ASE system will enforce posted school zone speed limits only during scheduled school zone hours when flashing lights are active, the department added. Citations are issued to drivers traveling at least 10 mph over the posted limit and reviewed by a sworn officer before being mailed. Each citation carries a civil fine of $100, but no DMV points or insurance penalties.
ASE equipment will be clearly marked, and the public will be provided notice ahead of enforcement, JCCPD said. For more information, including school zone hours and program details, visit this website.
