YORK COUNTY — Renovations are underway at the Victory Family YMCA in Yorktown.
The two-part renovation project will add a newly expanded lobby and welcome center, three new group exercise studios, and new child watch and youth watch rooms.
The youth watch and child watch rooms will also be relocated to the back of the building’s main entrance.
“We really had the lens of safety when we looked at this project. We relocated all of the youth and child watch rooms to the rear of the facility which will also now have a secure entrance,” Craig Payne, Vice President of Property and Construction, explained.
During the first phase of construction, the new front wing will be completed, while the rear of the building will be under renovation in the fall.
To add additional child watch space, the Victory Family YMCA has ceased operations of its racquetball courts. However, those who wish to play racquetball can visit the nearby Tom & Ann Hunnicutt Family YMCA in Newport News or Fort Monroe YMCA in Hampton, it said.
The center held a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovations in early June. The ceremony featured remarks from community and YMCA leaders, including John O’Shaughnessy, Chief Volunteer Officer for the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas; Jamé Bolds, Pastor and Advisory Board Member; Capital Campaign Chairs Rob Brown and Judy Layne-Wood; and YMCA President and CEO Adam Klutts.

They emphasized the community-driven vision that shaped this project and the critical role the YMCA plays in the health and well-being of residents.
“This expansion is not just about bricks and mortar — it’s about expanding our mission,” said Klutts. “With more space for youth programming, accessible group exercise, and wellness support, we’ll be able to help even more people thrive in spirit, mind, and body.”
York County also contributed $2 million towards the project for the installation of a generator so the building could serve as an emergency shelter if needed.
“This project supports family wellness, honors our inclusive mission, and strengthens our historic partnership with York County. It’s a moment of transformation for the Y and for the entire community,” Paul Parzik, Executive Director of the Victory Family YMCA, said.
The center remains open throughout the renovations and the project has an estimated completion date of December 2025. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new space is being planned for January 2026.
