ATLANTA — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that staff will hold an open house April 23 to discuss the 2024 safety performance of the Surry and North Anna nuclear power plants.

Both plants, with two units each, are operated by Dominion Energy.

The NRC concluded that both the Surry and North Anna plants operated safely throughout 2024, it said, however, for part of the year, North Anna Unit 2 was under increased agency oversight due to an inspection finding of low to moderate safety significance related to one of the unit’s emergency diesel generators. The NRC conducted a supplemental inspection in December and determined that the issue was properly understood and corrected. As a result, Unit 2 returned to normal oversight by the end of 2024.

The NRC said its Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red based on the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight, it added.

The annual assessment letters for both plants, including upcoming inspection plans, are available on the NRC website, and current performance information for Surry and North Anna is also available and updated quarterly.

The event will run from 5:30–7 p.m. at the Westerre Conference Center, 3831 Westerre Parkway, in Henrico. NRC employees who are responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at each site, will be available to answer questions at the event, according to NRC.

The public can also join the open house virtually via Microsoft Teams or by phone. To join by phone, call 301-576-2978 and enter passcode 735021475#.
