JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County has renamed its General Services Department to the Public Works Department, a change officials say better reflects the department’s responsibilities.
The new name is intended to provide clearer identification for residents, employees and community partners while bringing the county in line with naming conventions used by neighboring localities, according to a county news release.
The renaming is expected to cost less than $2,000, primarily for updates to campus signage and business cards. Branded materials will be replaced as existing supplies are depleted rather than all at once.
The department’s operating budget and approved funding will remain unchanged and continue to be managed under existing budget policies, the county said. The change is also expected to support recruitment, accreditation opportunities and professional recognition.
The department’s responsibilities will remain the same. Public Works includes the divisions of capital projects; custodial services; facilities maintenance; fleet and equipment; grounds maintenance; solid waste and recycling; and stormwater and resource protection.
